Tech Support – In Praise of Exercise Videos

Like a lot of other people, I once had a gym membership. My husband and I would go to work out together. Treadmill, weights, sauna … we tried to do it all. But eventually going to the gym felt like more trouble than it was worth. Exercise shifted to something we did at home.

This is not a sponsored post. I’m not being paid to write about cool stuff that makes my life easier.

I tried a couple of exercise video options. Before I was married, I was a devout Tamilee Webb follower. I had the Legs of Steel and Abs of Steel VHS tapes. I also had a stationary bike. I worked out every day after coming home from work.

Eventually it all felt a bit meh. As I grew older, I started feeling less inclined to work out, which fed into a feeling of failure. I still exercised, but it felt more like an unpleasant duty than a fun activity.

Then I had my stroke and was diagnosed with diabetes, and my view of exercise shifted. Exercise would help me control my diabetes. Exercise would help me regain flexibility and balance. But how could I get started?

I started googling, and stumbled on Tracy Campoli’s channel. Something about her style really clicked with me. Maybe it’s because she’s over 40. Maybe it’s because she stresses healthy eating and avoiding fad diets or flashy trends. Maybe it’s because she is so strongly positive and encouraging, and emphasizes the importance of adjusting the exercise to something that will work for you.

Since discovering her channel, I’ve incorporated a lot of her exercises into my own daily routine. I’ve also participated in a number of her special live Q&A sessions and found her to be responsive and encouraging whenever I talked about my own struggles. I’ve recommended her to other friends looking for new workout ideas.
