My Type 2 Diabetic Life – The High Cost of Living When You Need Insulin

There’s a recent Vox article going around cyberspace about the high cost of insulin. Yet another reason I’m grateful to be a type 2 diabetic who has managed to keep things under control on diet, exercise, and oral medication.

But there are far too many diabetics who aren’t so lucky, and through no fault of their own. Type 1 diabetics, for example, can’t wean themselves off insulin the way type 2 diabetics can. Not every type 2 diabetic can make it on oral medications alone.

So why is insulin so expensive? Why are so many diabetics rationing their insulin to the point of risking loss of limb, loss of kidneys, loss of life?

I know about some of the factors. Greedy pharmaceutical executives. Insurance companies who have dragged their feet when it comes to insulin coverage. Politicians who haven’t prioritized the health of their constituents. The general public perception that diabetes is an unfortunate consequence of poor lifestyle choices.

It makes me angry. The world is filled with deadly hazards. Diabetes shouldn’t be one of them.

So what do we do?

We change the world, if that’s what it takes. Educate yourself on the issues. If you’re an American, write to your representatives in Congress. If you have diabetic friends, ask them what it’s like to live with the disease. Learn a few diabetic recipes so they feel included at your parties.

Get angry. Get motivated. Get it done.
