I don’t have a ridiculous number of projects on my plate right now, and I can take an objective look at them and say which one should be done first. I should be able to tackle these in a reasonable, logical, and organized fashion.
Only I’m not.
There’s a short story where I have the story beats outlined. I know where it needs to go next, and the next beat after that. I know how it ends. Instead, I’m noodling around on a steampunk story where I realized yesterday that what I thought was the plot is really just the backstory. I just need to figure out what the real plot is. Eventually.
I have a Mother’s Day present that only needs a few rounds done before it’s ready to go. I could finish it in a day, or at least a weekend. Instead, today I’m finishing up a shawl intended for Christmas.
I have household chores that need doing. The kitchen floor needs cleaning. The litter boxes need scooping. The sink could use a scrub. The counters need wiping down. Instead, I took a nap this morning and then watched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
I usually spend Sundays planning and writing entries for this blog, to be posted throughout the week. Instead, I’m winging it with this post. Then I’m going to watch Ant-Man and the Wasp. I’m not even a huge Marvel fan; I own hundreds of DC Comics issues.
If the rule is to follow where the muse takes you, today the muse is telling me to take it easy. Or maybe she’s sleeping off a bender. At any rate, I’m going to do what I want, and not what I should today.
